DeForrest Brown Jr.

Synoptic Audio

DeForrest Brown Jr. is a rhythmanalyst, writer, musician, and curator whose explorations in electronic music take a metaphilosophical approach. Through sound, his works channel the Black modernist tradition of "rhythm and soul music as an intellectual site and sound of techno-vernacular expression," as his three albums on Planet Mu attest to. He blends abstract electronics, high-energy electro, and deconstructed, Afrofuturist techno – summoning the submerged mythologies and sonics of Detroit icons Drexicya. His debut publication, Assembling a Black Counter Culture (2022) presents a comprehensive account of techno, with a focus on the history of Black experiences in industrialised labour systems. He performs twice at Rewire 2026: in this performance as DeForrest Brown Jr., he presents 'Synoptic Audio' – a work of sonic theory fiction and live electronic performance ahead of a forthcoming album on Planet Mu; he also performs a live set under his Speaker Music moniker.

This work is commissioned by, and developed in residence at, Somerset House Studios.
