Finally making his long-overdue Rewire festival debut at this year’s edition, producer and DJ De Schuurman is a champion of the feet-forward “bubbling” sound. Bubbling took off in the late 1980s at Club Voltage in The Hague when Curaçaon DJ Moortje played a dancehall record at 45RPM instead of 33RPM. From this fabled moment, a new speed-focussed style emerged that defined the Netherlands’ Afro-diasporic club landscape for decades – a style full of squeaky vocals and rapid, buoyant beats. Although a stalwart of the Dutch bubbling scene since the late 2000s, De Schuurman’s tracks rarely saw proper release until Ugandan label Nyege Nyege Tapes released Bubbling Inside in 2021, launching him into global view. Follow-up Bubbling Forever (2024) released to acclaim, flooding dancefloors in the Netherlands and beyond with its vibrant chirping synths, fast-paced percussion, and hyperactive dub sirens. Drawing in contemporary sounds, De Schuurman’s take on bubbling borrows trap and club influences to keep redefining this ever evolving hybrid sound.
