Deb Googe, aka da Googie, cut her teeth as the bassist for shoegazing giants My Bloody Valentine; in the years since, she has played with Primal Scream, formed the group Snowpony with Stereolab’s Katharine Gifford, and has collaborated with Thurston Moore, among other projects. Cara Tivey is a longtime collaborator of Billy Bragg, and has played with countless artists, including Everything But The Girl, Blur, and Au Pairs. Despite storied and renowned careers that span decades, The Golden Thread (2025) – their debut as collaborators – is the first time that both musicians release music under their own names. On the monumental record, snarling distorted guitar drones, bowed and scratched, are interwoven with delicate piano and enchanting vocals. The duo creates a bristling sound world of intensity and care, where noise and melody entwine; their bass-driven industrialised alternative revels gleefully in low frequencies, creating curiously catchy cacophonies from a toybox of haunted sounds.
