As Cucina Povera, the Finnish-born, Glasgow-based sound artist Maria Rossi utilises everyday encounters and field recordings to create poignant “found soundscapes” with a stark setup that can fit into a backpack. Her 2019 album, ‘Zoom’, serves as a sonic diary of intriguing acoustic spaces, featuring eight songs made exclusively from looped and layered vocal recordings using only an effects pedal and a Zoom H2N recorder. Trained at the Conservatoire Nationale de Luxembourg, she moved to Scotland in 2009, becoming aligned with Glasgow’s burgeoning underground music scene via promoting events and hosting radio shows before learning production at the renowned nonprofit community space Green Door.
