Cello Octet Amsterdam feat. Shishani & Moor Mother

Borrowed Time

Cello Octet Amsterdam have made a name for themselves as a distinguished chamber-music ensemble, sharing collaborations with composers such as Philip Glass, Sofia Gubaidulina, and Arvo Pärt. Inspired by ideas of non-linear and deep time, they present a world premiere performance at Rewire 2026, made in collaboration with five composer-vocalists: Moor Mother, performing with SUMAC and Hieroglyphic Being at the festival; composer Qasim Naqvi and Hatis Noit, vocal performer who appeared at Rewire 2023; Nyokabi Kariũki, composer, performer, and researcher who presented Birdsongs from Kĩrĩnyaga last year with Cello Octet; Loraine James, producer and another Rewire-alumni; Grammy-winning composer, musician, and singer Arooj Aftab; and Shishani, a Namibia-born, Amsterdam-based vocalist and researcher. This new collaborative work looks at the idea of good ancestorhood, or, how one can act in the current moment to bring future generations closer to the present. It combines live cellos with recorded and live voices to form a mosaic of different temporalities and chronotopes, featuring live appearances from Moor Mother and Shishani.
