Body Meat is the shapeshifting project of singer, songwriter, and producer Christopher Taylor – an artist whose experimental pop is warped by influences as far ranging as R&B, IDM, trap, and metal. Described as an “avant-pop phantasmagoria,” his debut LP Starchris (2024) is a behemoth of different sounds and production styles; at its core is the tangible, carefree pop imagination in Taylor’s catchy vocals. It would be easy to refer to Body Meat’s fast-paced and ever-shifting music as cinematic, but Taylor has layered and structured Starchris more like a video game – with each track unfolding like a new level, interrupted by mini-bosses and hidden paths. Speaking to Still Listening Magazine of the vast lore of game worlds and their hidden details, Taylor says, “I tried to do that with sounds. To build a world with all of these distinct pieces, destroy them and bring them back smaller or bigger.” While Body Meat shines in his big moments of lavish pop extravagance, he also offers something intimate and special in his small moments of retraction and simplicity.
