Blacks' Myths

NL premiere

Blacks’ Myths is a duo from Washington DC, based in New York City, featuring Luke Stewart on bass and Trae Crudup on drums. Their unique sound is one of avant-garde intensity, poetic lyricism, and cataclysmic noise. Although one can hear the influence of Washington DC’s punk lineage leak into the music – like on their tracks “Rapture” and “Stand Your Ground,” which detonate with blast beats and distorted guitar – their background as storied musicians of their respective jazz scenes is clearly heard in their experimental approach to their sound and its expert execution. Their sound is like cosmic jazz that has been reinvented with a noisy apocalyptic forbodingness, suited for a contemporary world ravaged by inequality and violence. They take the filmic, smoky jazz-bar sound and saturate it in psychedelic tones. While taking their instruments down less-trodden paths, Blacks’ Myths construct monumental and hypnotic rhythmic structures which are astounding, calamitous, and politically driven – always drawing from Black American history, memory, and lived experience to tell stories and create new mythologies in sound.
