Belia Winnewisser is a Zurich-based musician who – following involvement across many years in various bands (Evje, Silver Firs, a=f/m) – began working solo in 2018 and has released prolifically in the years since, while DJing and performing. On Winnewisser’s third album, The Essence Of (2024) on Cologne-based label SPA, a game-like majesty unfurls in her bright productions: their melodies and tones act as waypoints for wary travellers to find respite in the cosy corners of its fantastic sound world. It’s unsurprising to learn that she drew inspiration for the album from childhood memories of playing The Legend of Zelda; across its different songs it retains the playful charm and unbridled sense of adventure that all heroic protagonists have. From glimmering synths and echoing bass drums, to expansive arpeggios and clattering snare drums, Winnewisser’s energetic music combines grand gestures with moments of careful detail to create something truly lush. This is encapsulated by her live shows, which move between shadowy abstract electronics and brighter poppy moments.
