Beans is the project of hip hop luminary Robert Edward Stewart, an abstract poet and an innovative architect of electronic-infused beatscapes. He has been active since the late nineties, starting out as a founding member of the acclaimed underground hip hop group Antipop Consortium. When the group disbanded in 2003 – to reunite later that decade – Beans started releasing music on labels like Anticon, Tygr Rawwk, Hello.L.A, and the iconic Warp Records. His quintessential approach to lyrics and production paved the way for the experimental hip hop that flourished in his wake, and his style sounds as fresh today as it did when he first started. His newest release ZWAARD (2024), produced by Finnish artist and producer Vladislav Delay, is packed with transcendental production, crisp beats, and the unconventional futurist approach to lyrics – both writing and delivery – that makes Beans who he is. Artful barraging bars mix with unpredictable production into a poetic mural of unrivalled abstraction and knowledge.
