Music programme Rewire 2017 complete

16 Feb 2017

With just six weeks to go, we’re excited to unveil the final acts for the Rewire 2017 music programme. Having previously confirmed Jeff Mills & Tony Allen, Swans, Arca & Jesse Kanda and Forest Swords, we’re proud to now add a selection of special projects and exclusive performances.

Joining the lineup for the 7th edition of Rewire are Slowdive, Blanck Mass, Jace Clayton presents Julius Eastman Memorial Dinner, AGF & Kubra Khademi, SØS Gunver Ryberg, Oliver Coates, Kassel Jaeger, Greg Fox, Kobe van Cauwenberghe, HOEK & Dieter Vandoren, DSR Lines, Igor C Silva, Torus & Nikki Hock and S.T. Cordell.

Spread across three full days and the city’s key cultural and nightlife venues, Rewire 2017 takes place in The Hague from 31 March to 2 April. Festival passes and day tickets can be purchased through: www.rewirefestival.nl/tickets.

Having just announced the release of their first album in 20 years with the celestial haze of lead single ‘Star Roving’, British shoegaze legends Slowdive head to Rewire 2017 for an exclusive Dutch performance. Originally formed in the late 80s, Slowdive was heralded as the creators of a wondrous new music that blended the atmospherics of Brian Eno with the noise of The Jesus and Mary Chain. Reuniting in their original constellation, with Simon Scott on drums and the glorious guitar/vocal duet of Rachel Goswell and Neil Halstead, Slowdive treat the Friday night of Rewire 2017 to their iconic originals, ‘Souvlaki’ and ‘Pygmalion’, as well as their highly anticipated newcomer.

Joining Slowdive on the festival Friday is Blanck Mass, the solo moniker of British electronic artist and Fuck Buttons co-founder Benjamin John Power. Releasing his self-titled debut under the moniker on Mogwai’s Rock Action label in 2011, Blanck Mass sees Powers extend the sweeping emotional and physical power of Fuck Buttons’ sound into hypnotic, ambient realms. With his third album set to be released on 3 March via Brooklyn indie Sacred Bones Records, Blanck Mass turns in his first ever protest music. Routed in blissful dance music with a terrifying twist, ‘World Eater’ is a thorough rejection of the hate in the world right now that sheds new light on the importance of love.

On the festival Saturday, New York-based artist and writer Jace Clayton, also known as the infamous DJ /rupture, presents the European premiere of theJulius Eastman Memorial Dinner. Conceived for twin pianos, live electronics, and voice, this exhilarating sonic exploration brings fresh insight to the artistic legacy of Julius Eastman – the mercurial gay African American composer who mixed canny minimalist innovation with head-on political provocation. The Julius Eastman Memorial Dinner is built around new arrangements of Evil Nigger (1979) and Gay Guerrilla (1980), two of Julius Eastman’s most important piano compositions. At Rewire 2017, Jace Clayton will be joined by acclaimed New York experimentalist David Friend and versatile Dutch soloist Saskia Lankhoorn on the grand pianos.

Also confirmed for Saturday, 1 April is the world premiere of the new collaborative performance between German poet, vocalist and new media artist AGF (Antye Greie) and Afghan performance artist and activist Kubra Khademi. As AGF, Greie examines speech and spoken word in the context of the darker corners of electronic music, while Kubra Khademi explores her life as a refugee and a woman by creating public performances that respond to male-dominated societies and extreme patriarchal politics. Their Rewire 2017 premiere fuses Khademi’s politically-charged performance art with AGF’s distinctive sound art to produce a truly subconscious work that deals with womenhood, white supremacy and intersectional feminism.
